Still on the edge about whether to sign up? Here’s a testimony from longtime member Paul Bye.
I’ll put in my plug for the Open – the first year I was at CFP and everyone was talking about the open, I thought “why would I do this, I’m not a competitor and have no chance of qualifying for anything?” I remember various people in class talking about it and being excited about it, including a conversation I remember having with John Colbert, which is what finally encouraged me to go ahead and sign up and do it.
I’ve done 6 opens, and every single one has produced some significant achievement in my fitness journey, because I pushed a little and/or tried something I hadn’t tried before (safely, of course!) 2013 – first T2B (got 5), first 135# snatch, 2014 – first C2B (got 5), first actual double-under, 2015 – Clean & Jerk PR, 2017 – did all workouts Rx, 2018 – first HSPU, most double-unders in a WOD by over 3x. And we’ve done many of these workouts again in class over the years, which have been great as benchmarks.
I’ve also taken 1 or 2 things from each open to focus on or work on the next year – like after 2013 I decided I should be able to do 150 wallballs in under 12 minutes, or after 2017 I decided maybe it was finally time to figure out these double-unders things.
Obviously always be safe, have good form, listen to coaches etc. but having a world-wide WOD challenge in front of you when you’re surrounded by your FNL teammates and buddies to cheer you on can be a great time to push yourself and try for something new!
