When he’s not putting in work at the gym you can find him spending lots of time outdoors. You should also know this… JR is a ball of energy and we’re lucky to have him. Read on to get to know JR Hanenberger.
What do you do for a living?
Associate Technician at SEH which is an engineering firm.
What’s your favorite thing to do outside of the gym?
Anything outdoors! Love to bow hunt for some 4 legged wood rats, (deer), Hunt the elusive sky chickens (ducks), sit out on the frozen lake ice fishing, and go shed hunting with the pup!
What made you decide to try Progression?
Jenna Obernolte convinced me to come to a class because I told her I was fed up with just going to a gym putting headphones in and doing a workout by myself since joining I have been chugging the Kool-aid!
How long have you been at CFP?
I think it’s been around a year and a half.
What was your experience with fitness prior to Progression?
I was always pretty fit with wrestling, and being in the military. I competed in several powerlifting competitions.
What was your biggest fear when you started?
The cardio aspect built into every WOD (I truly and deeply hate cardio).
Favorite cheat day meal?
Everyday is a cheat day!
What goal(s) are you currently chasing?
Qualifying for state in Olympic weightlifting! Also everyday I make it a point to try and beat Rob!
What’s the hardest part about your fitness journey at the moment?
Eating healthier to lose weight to get to the 69kg weight class! Eight pounds down, 8 to go! Also Rob is a tank so trying to beat him all the time is tough for me.
What’s one thing your fellow CFP’ers would be surprised to learn about you?
I was on the show MTV’s Ridiculousness!
What’s your favorite piece of advice you’ve gotten from a coach or member at CFP?
So many to say since very coach has given me such solid advice but one that has stuck with me is what Rob said “between the ears baby!” So much of CrossFit, lifting for me is a mental game.
How has your outlook on health/fitness changed since starting CrossFit?
Before joining I didn’t really think long term health and fitness. I would just go and lift and not worry how if affected my body. Now it’s a goal to still be doing CrossFit as long as I’m able to!
What has been your fondest memory during your time at CFP?
Has to be more than one! All the 7:30pm classes with the Closers! You guys are amazing people! Also the Granite Games and feeling absolutely destroyed! Last one is doing Murph or any other Hero WOD. They are all so brutal but knowing you’re suffering in honor of someone that was willing to sacrifice their lives so all of us can live in a free country is by far the greatest thing I think anyone can do.
Why do you think you’ve stuck with CFP?
The coaches and members! Such great knowledge and willingness to help if you have a question. If I have a bad day the only thing I want to do is come to the gym and work out with everyone.
What would be your one piece of advice for someone who’s just joining Progression?
If you’re intimidated by a movement work and work and work some more at it until it becomes natural to you!
