Member Profile: Martha B

You may not know Martha yet, but the chance is you have seen her. She put in WORK in July, logging an all-time record (?) of 36 classes in a single month. Not surprisingly, the consistency has paid off with a major transformation and frequent PRs. She relies on the support of those around her, particularly her sister Mary, but knows that if real change is to happen it is ultimately up to YOU.

What brought you to Progression Fitness?

My dad works at Western Digital and saw a Facebook post promoting one of the last CrossFit boot camps and asked my family who would be interested. My sister Mary and I started together and still go together almost every day.

When do you usually work out?

3:30 all the way 😊

What is your favorite CrossFit exercise movement?

I’ve come to love almost any and all of the Olympic lifts. It is so fun to see how far I’ve come with them since when I first started.

What is your most hated exercise movement?

Burpees (sorry Tony)

What is your favorite clean food?

Hmmm, broccoli?

What is your favorite cheat food?

RICE!

What do you like to do with your free time?

Sleep or babysit kids (wink wink to the new moms 😊 )

Do you encounter functional fitness in your life? Does being functionally fit help you in your job or your hobbies?

Some days I do at work. I’m a barista at Dunn Bros coffee. Also when playing and being active with the kids I watch.

What goals are you chasing?

Just loving myself more every day for becoming the person I am, and that I realized I needed this change in my life.

Who motivates you?

Hands down, Mary, my sister. We’ve been through it all. Juli as a friend and nutrition coach and everyone in the 3:30 class.

What were you scared/nervous about when starting Progression fitness?

Not knowing the workouts until I got to the gym, and not knowing if I would be capable of doing them or holding people back that I’d partner up with.

Now that you have been at Progression Fitness for a while, was there anything you originally were wrong about, but now have changed your mind?

That you can do anything for 90 seconds

What is something you couldn’t do before, but now you can?

Hang from the pull-up rig

What is your Personal Record that you are most proud of?

Probably my 295# deadlift, but I’ve been able to make new PRs on other lifts almost weekly.

What is your fitness background? Have you played sports? Do you have a favorite sport now?

I played basketball when I was in middle school. Unfortunately, I had to have hip surgery to screw my growth plate back in place and had to be on crutches for 2 months. That’s when most of my weight gain and lack of motivation for activity started. Fav sport…CrossFit if it counts.

Are there any competitions/races in your future?

I would love to try for a competition again, I had lots of fun at GameDay Rochester. I just need the perfect team.

What advice do you have to help others keep coming consistently?

Find a workout buddy. That helps a lot if you aren’t very self-motivated, but remember, only you can make the change happen.

What would you say to someone that is thinking about trying Progression Fitness but isn’t sure it is for them?

Just give it a try. Just once or maybe for a week. If it doesn’t do it for you, be happy for yourself that you gave it a shot and did your best.
