Did you know that 1 in 3 American adults are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes?
Over time, having type 2 diabetes can become burdensome, causing nerve, kidney, and heart damage and even blindness, greatly impacting your overall quality of life. The cost of managing this condition can become overwhelming, with some research reporting that people with diagnosed diabetes incur average medical expenditures of $16,752 per year, of which about $9,601 is attributed to diabetes. On average, people with diagnosed diabetes have medical expenditures approximately 2.3 times higher than what expenditures would be in the absence of diabetes.
The good news is that by investing in your health now and being consistent with lifestyle changes, you may avoid the serious health complications of type 2 diabetes in the future. Lifestyle modifications, in particular consistent efforts to exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet, can reduce the risk of going from pre-diabetes to type 2 diabetes by more than 50%. That’s a powerful thought. Take a moment to look at these slides with our quiz to determine if you are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.
